The immortal Skinners Bluff Hike #30

Skinners Bluff is the most popular hike in the Sydenham section of the Bruce Trail.

There are a few things that make this a popular hike. The loop that is formed by taking the main trail west along the escarpment, and circling back to the parking by way of the Chris Walker side trail is only 3.5 km It was a nice hour hike for us.

This loop still feels wild. The path is narrow, criss-crossed with roots and studded with rocks. You gain some elevation climbing to the bluff, but not enough to make it exhausting.

And there is a big fat carrot, that is only about 15 minutes from the parking. A beautiful bluff with photo spots to take advantage of it.

A bluff by definition is a broad rounded cliff who's underside was eroded away by moving water.

If you're lucky along the escarpment, not only do you get a bluff with an amazing clear view, but if you continue a little along the path you can look back and see the bluff reaching out into the air.

We were being cautious (which of course is recommended!) when taking photos, and we were only using our cell phones, but I've seen some amazing shots from here!

Something that I forget about this hike every time is the gap. Mind the gap! Hold on to small children and dogs! There is a pretty decent crevice to clear before getting out on the bluff so please be careful!

There are 3 great look out spots along the escarpment trail overlooking Colpoys Bay.

When you get to a clearing you'll see the Chris Walker Side Trail on your left. It's a great side trail through the forest leading back to your vehicle. This split rail fence is beautiful!

This is a pretty busy trail. There is only really space for 8 cars to park, so I'd suggest starting early. This is the same parking spot we started in for our hike to The Slough of Despond.

This hike is always beautiful, but catching the fall colours when they're at their peak is beyond amazing! We were a couple of weeks past their prime on this day, but still lots of yellow left in the trees.

When you're done your hike, drive over to Big Bay, the stone skipping capitol of Canada! You'll also find the Big Bay General Store who makes the best ice cream with the most interesting flavours!

If you drive west towards Wiarton along Conc 1, you'll be able to see Skinners Bluff from the bottom and that's beautiful too! Get the full experience and visit each season!
